Creating a list of sites and places that are “distinctly or uniquely” American is an ambitious task. Certainly, places where history happened provide a foundation for Authentic America. However, having historical or cultural significance does not encompass everyone’s American experience. As our country ages, some manufactured places represent historically significant advances and innovations worthy of being considered “authentic.” Four criteria help assess potential sites and events for recognition.

Criteria 1: Found Only in America

Identifying one-of-a-kind places and easily recognized sites that have been bucket list locations for travelers may appear to be an easy criterion. However, the key to this criterion is understanding the context of each place’s significance. These places are often recognized for their natural, historical, or cultural value and because they visually represent America’s distinct brand. Learning how they became these iconic representations of America is part of the story.

Criteria 2: Firsts and Births

Since its founding as a republic, America has valued creativity and ingenuity. Citizens have embarked on problem-solving and inventions to improve their lives and those of others. The U.S. Patent Office, founded in 1790, has granted more than 11.7 million utility patents. In September 2023, the Patent Office issued its one millionth design patent. During COVID, more than 700,000 patents were awarded.

Numerous American inventions have had a monumental impact on our world. Where these inventions began or were conceived deserves a place on the list. Some of the most important music genres, foods, and art enjoyed worldwide were birthed in America, often as a mixing of cultures or transformation of other art forms. The roots of these products, concepts, genres, or activities help define Americans’ ingenuity, innovation, and inventiveness.

Criteria 3: Revolutionary Impact

Innovations and inventions such as the Internet, GPS, the airplane, cell phone, and the moving assembly line forever changed how America–and the world–lives, works, and plays. Contemporary innovations were often built upon earlier inventions for greater efficiency, scope, and impact. Henry Ford transformed the production of automobiles, while Orville and Wilbur Wright transformed air travel. Silicon Valley tech startups and entrepreneurs utilize a spirit of innovation and creative culture to revolutionize consumer products and communication.

Criteria 4: Decisive Moments

While the American narrative has historically focused on one perspective, the nation’s story is much more complex and diverse. Therefore, identifying places that offer a context for telling America’s complete story, past to present, through its trials and tribulations, is important to understanding how the country’s founding doctrine was often–and continues to be–tested. Individual citizens’ pain, suffering, resiliency, and fortitude are revealed and commemorated at sacred memorials and sites. Historical sites are also reminders of our tragedies, achievements, and attempts to correct injustices. The places that serve as tipping points for change or the origin of a movement help us strive to realize the American ideals set forth by the U.S. Constitution.

These criteria are only one of many ways to define the authenticity of a place or experience. However, for the book and this website, the criteria offer a qualification for consideration.
